The Hangar doors return to Brabazon

The Hangar Doors Reinstated

The original historic wooden doors of The Hangar have been lovingly restored and carefully reinstated, marking the next step in creating a vibrant new community hub for North Bristol at Brabazon.

Reopening the doors on our historic past

The Hangar’s iconic doors are back - and the future community hub is taking shape.

In a powerful nod to the Brabazon’s aviation heritage, YTL Construction UK has reinstated three original, fully restored wooden doors on the eastern wing of The Hangar. This Grade II-listed building once housed the Royal Flying Corps, assembling and maintaining aircraft in the airfield's aviation heyday.

These one-tonne timber doors were carefully removed and lovingly restored by local specialists Stephens & Giles Carpenters. Now, they’ve been returned to their original location, standing tall once more as a striking symbol of The Hangar’s past - and its exciting future as a lively community hub.

Phill Edwards, Operations Manager at YTL Construction, said: “The reinstallation of the historic doors is a powerful symbol of The Hangar site’s transformation - honouring its past while embracing its future as a vibrant local destination.”

Restoring these doors was a true collaborative effort - involving conservation specialists, architects, heritage officers, engineers and expert movers Keith Rhodes Machinery Installations Ltd. Together, they’ve ensured that the building’s unique character is preserved while preparing it to welcome a new generation of visitors.

What’s coming to The Hangar

Opening early next year, The Hangar will be at the heart of the Brabazon community. Inside, you’ll find:

  • an open-plan cafe by local favourite Mokoko
  • a community-focused fitness centre
  • flexible activity rooms and a large hall for events, performances, live music, and public gatherings.

Outside, a new public square will host pop-up markets, street food stalls, and open-air events, right by the doors that once welcomed iconic aircraft.

Stay tuned - The Hangar is just the beginning. Sign up to Brabazon’s neighbourhood newsletter to read all about it as it develops.
